Note from the director

“I’m truly delighted to be performing once again with the Chœur Louisbourg at the
Sackville Festival of Early Music. The choir will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in
2026, and it feels wonderful to return to the very place where its journey began 19 years ago. For eight of those years, the choir served as the festival’s appointed chamber choir, creating deep artistic bonds and lasting friendships. It is therefore always a joy to reconnect with the SFEM, a festival that remains such an important part of the choir’s history and spirit.”

The Italian Renaissance program features 17 madrigals and frottolas from 6 different
composers, but mostly by Monteverdi (1567-1633).

They are true musical treasures that combine poetry and music, where through the
brilliance of the voices, love becomes music. One then hears the poets’ beating hearts: their sighs of love, their tears of sorrow, their bursts of joy, which touch on these great universal themes: love, joy, sorrow, and nature.

To grasp all the subtleties of these narratives, sometimes risqué and full of “double
entendre”, some choristers will present the main themes of the concert in an original
and dramatic. In addition, you will hear a variety of period instruments, including violins, the dulcian, the harpsichord, the viola da gamba, and different percussion instruments that give each piece its own unique color.

In the Renaissance, madrigals were sung in palaces and gardens, for the enjoyment of friends. Since a madrigal is about experiencing the intimacy and sensuality of Renaissance Italy, come and do as they once did, and hear the Chœur Louisbourg, alongside wonderful instrumentalists, for your enjoyment.
