Johann Sebastian Bach’s family home in Leipzig was a revolving door of illustrious and celebrated musicians. These musicians came both from within the family and visitors who came from far and near. We can safely suppose that Bach adapted his vast chamber music repertory to suit the occasion, depending upon which celebrated person was in attendance or which son was at home. It was not uncommon for the Baroque composer to rework, transpose or assign different instrumentation to their compositions when adapting for the personnel available. Unquestionably, singing was a beloved feature at such an occasion. We propose a representative program that features both works adapted by Bach for various instrumentation and some of our own adaptations. On top of this, we will present popular soprano arias from Bach's secular cantatas and this will enhance our presentation of A Musical Soirée at the Home of Bach.
New Brunswick artist, Deanna Musgrave, will join the ensemble, showcasing two works reflecting the title of the program and the nature of the of music.

Land of Three Faiths: Voices of Ancient Mediterranean Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The result of years of intensive research and training, “Land of Three Faiths” is simultaneously sacred, secular, folk, and classical, whilst embarking on a fascinating exploration of language, spirituality, and cultural exchange. Promoting instruments and musical ideas that blur the lines between Arabic and European cultures, this entertaining and enlightening program is steeped in the rich history of the Abrahamic faiths. By doing this, we are able to achieve the perfect balance of edgy improvisation, exotic vocal styles, and ancient traditions. To highlight the Hispano-Arabic Middle Ages as both an important and devastating chapter of Judaic, Christian, and Islamic history, the laments of the Sephardic Jews mingle with Arab-Andalusian dances. Furthermore, Spanish court songs, rhythmic cantigas, Hebrew cantillation, and Gregorian chant meet and blend with the mystical world of Sufi poetry. “This program wasn’t a performance. It was more like a resurrection. The Rose Ensemble breathes life into stark, ancient manuscripts . . . restores them as new creations.” —Ames Life & Times.

Pascal Valois, romantic guitar, and Jacques-André Houle, violin, with Concert Spirituel! This program presents music from the end of the eighteenth century for guitar and violin duo. They will feature works by musicians who were involved with the Parisian Concert Spirituel between the years of 1770-1790.

Colloquium: Deanna Musgrave presents 13 Years Later: Exploring Visual Music since Mount Allison University

Visual Artist Deanna Musgrave discusses the highlights of her career since her 2005 graduation from Mount Allison University's Fine Arts program. This colloquium will focus on her work in visual music and her collaborations with musicians. Her talk will conclude with performances of Anthony Gengre's piece "Motion" and JoMasrdan Nobles' "Circle of Fifths". They will be performed by Andrew Reed Miller (contrabass), Karin Aurell (flutes), James Kayln (clarinet), Joël Cormier (percussion). Performance is presented by Resonance New Music.

Sweden's Secret, featuring Kirsty Money, nyckelharpa, and Jude Pelley, guitar, explores the dance forms of traditional Swedish music, as well as other repertoire that highlights the nyckelharpa. This program will include baroque music as well as contemporary songs.
